Sanitation, Water & Hygiene Program
In India, 80% of sickness and death among children is caused by unsafe drinking water and dehydration. In most rural areas, like Varanasi, where only 31% of the rural population currently has access to a potable water supply and only 0.5% enjoys basic sanitation, villagers have to walk long distances to access clean drinking water and many simply don’t know about the importance of sanitation.
Investments in water quality and quantity will reduce childhood deaths caused from diarrhea by 15-20%- better hygiene, such as washing hands and handling food safely reduces this statistic by 35%, and improved sanitation reduces it by 40%.

| The Sanitation, Water & Hygiene program is a very vital part of Sampurn Development India through we which provide clean drinking water to needy people like villagers, school students & staff, organizations, hospital inmates and staff- wherever the need be. Applications are invited from people living in areas where drinking water availability is scarce and careful surveys are conducted by the SDI staff before sanctioning of the hand pump. Thousands have been benefited from this project since its inception. Last year from April 2006 to March 2007, 10 hand pumps were installed in different villages across the states of Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. Next year from April 2007 to March 2008 we intend to reach out to many more people through these hand pumps so that many more may be benefited.
